A review about phytoremediation as a viable alternative for treating contaminated soils polluted with organic compounds during the last decade was carried out.

The relation between the activation of antioxidant mechanisms that prevent oxidative stress as well as the capacity of a plant to support the presence of contaminants is revised.

The revision relies upon recent references and original schemes that facilitate the understanding of key processes in phytoremediation.
