Obtaining cellulose fiber from Oryza sativa (rice husk)

Abstract

Rice straw is a lignocellulosic agricultural residue derived as a byproduct of oryza sativa cultivation, whose industrial utilization remains limited. In this study, this biomass was evaluated as a raw material for cellulose fiber production through a detailed physicochemical characterization and the application of chemical treatments aimed at lignin removal. These processes included alkaline pretreatments optimized by varying operational parameters such as concentration, reaction time, and temperature. Experimental result indicated a composition of 35.44% cellulose, 18% lignin, and 28.24% hemicellulose, confirming the suitability of the material for cellulose extraction and its potential for industrial application. From the extracted fibers, Kraft-type paper was produced, exhibiting thickness values between 0.53 and 0.96 mm, a slightly alkaline pH with an average value of 8.63, and mechanical properties dependent on processing conditions. Paper sample 1 showed grater ductility, reaching a maximum displacement of 0.775± 0.289 mm. Finally, a preliminary economic analysis estimated a unit cost of USD 1.57 per Kraft paper sheet produced (per unit of finished product), including amortization, indicating favorable margins under viable commercialization scenarios. Overall, the results, demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of the proposed process.
